PhD Day 2023

The PPHS PhD Day is a yearly event to foster the exchange among PhD candidates in the Health Sciences at the University of Basel. On May 11 2023, about 30 PhD candidates participated in this PhD day held at the Biozentrum.

We thank all the participants and especially the speakers for their contributions.

Student presentations

Three PhD students from PPHS presented their research, each one in a different stage of their PhD. We very much appreciated the efforts they took in order to present their research.

Fabienne Bruggisser presented her PhD proposal: Effects of Physical exercise timing On strength and Cardiometabolic Health (EPOCH). She is a first-year PhD student in Sport Science.

Tim Woelfle  presented his research: Smartwatch-Derived Measures of Physical Activity, Heart Rate and Sleep in Multiple Sclerosis (MS) that was partially published here. Tim is a third-year PhD in Biomedical Engineering.

Lucia Gonzalez Fernandez presented her work about Epidemiological transition in Lesotho: The double problem. Increasing prevalence of non-communicable diseases. She could already publish her work. Lucia is also a third-year PhD (in Public Health/Epidemiology) and is planning her defense for this fall.

Networking: Speed Date Bingo

In our networking part we did a speed date bingo this year which turned into quite a fun activity and had 3 winners. Congratulations!

We hope you met new peers and found out some interesting facts about them.

Workshop: Appearing confident and competent in front of an audience

This last part was facilitated by Kristin Wunder und Fabian Eckenfels. They took our awareness to the tight link between our body and the brain – if you feel safe and comfortable in your body, you will make a confident and competent impression. So, listen to your

  • Legs: put them close each other, a bit broader or very broad – what feels good?
  • Head: straight or tilted to a side? Usually, a presenter with straight head is perceived as more competent than one with a tilted head.
  • Hands: keep them relaxed in your preferable position: crossed in front of your body or in the back, in pockets or by holding cards or a pen (not clicking though)
  • Breast: open your heart and keep your breast up as if you had wings to open widely.
Try out: the height of your sternum influences the sound of your voice.
  • Body: move in a comfortable pace. Tip: in case of a black-out, start moving!

Try out what happens if you forbid any gestures or movements to your hands, legs, arms, face, or body. You will very likely experience a higher activity in those parts that are allowed to move.
